COMMERCIAL PILOTS

INFORMATIVE INFORMATION FOR ASPIRING AND COMMERCIAL PILOTS

IF YOU are an aspiring pilot working on your commercial pilot’s license, the link  to the FAA website will show you the requirement to attain that goal, FAA.gov.  Two main requirements to keep in mind: 1- be 18 years old, and 2- already have an instrument rating on your private pilot certificate.

WHY HAVE an instrument rating on your private pilot license?  The FAA will endorse your new commercial pilot license with a restriction - “Carrying passengers in airplanes for hire is prohibited at night or on cross-country flights of more than 50 nautical miles.”  This is very restrictive unless your goal is to become a crop duster pilot or a banner towing pilot, which operation by its nature complies with the restriction.

PILOT APPLICANTS for a commercial pilot’s license are also required to complete the required flight and ground training shown in the FAA commercial pilot test standards guide (see link above).  You must also pass the FAA commercial pilot knowledge test and pass an oral examination, with the FAA or a designated pilot examiner, in your local area.  Designated pilot examiners are experienced pilots appointed by the FAA with the authority to conduct the commercial pilot flight test.  Pilot examiners will charge a fee for the flight test.  When you make an appointment with the flight examiner, ask how much the examiner charges for the flight test, so you can be prepared to pay when you arrive for the flight test.
